School psychologists have a vital responsibility in the nation's schools to promote mental health and secure quality education for all children. [+]

School psychologists have a vital responsibility in the nation's schools to promote mental health and secure quality education for all children. Our Master of Arts/Educational Specialist (MA/EdS) degree in School Psychology is founded on the following philosophical principles:

We are morally and ethically compelled to address the inequities in our nation's educational system, such as the underachievement of racial and linguistic minority children and the misidentification of children with disabilities. All knowledge is historically situated. The systemic problems children face in schools exist within a network of social relationships that can be studied and transformed. New knowledge and research are generated within a socio-political context. This context is infused in our program via the reflection upon all aspects of practice through a multicultural lens. We emphasize an expanded, problem solving role for school psychologists built upon an eco-systemic and developmental perspective necessary to address the complex nature of contemporary school related problems. Tufts University's School Psychology Program supports the Nondiscrimination and Equal Opportunity Policy developed by the National Association of School Psychologists. ... [-]

Philosophy

In the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program, we don't teach you how to teach. Instead, we teach you how to think deeply about teaching and the relationships that are critical for effective teaching and learning. These relationships exist within what Joseph McDonald calls the wild triangle: "Real teaching, I learned in time, happens inside a wild triangle of relationships - among teacher, students, subject - and the points of this triangle shift continuously" (1).* To prepare to be teachers, we begin our work together by exploring our own experiences with these relationships in our own education.

Overview

Students ordinarily complete the program, which requires completion of ten to twelve courses, within one academic year and two summer semesters. Candidates may choose to extend their studies and student teaching for a longer time period. Advisors work with candidates to ensure that their coursework meets all the requirements for Massachusetts Initial license, developed by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Eight of the required courses are in education, including field-based experiences. Each student also takes two to four graduate level courses in the academic field for which license is sought.... Philosophy

Elementary schools are the ultimate interdisciplinary institutions. Elementary school teachers are asked to teach reading, writing, mathematics, science, engineering, social studies, art, and other skills and practices. More and more, those teachers with strengths and expertise in specific areas—the STEM disciplines, for example—are becoming valued resources in their respective schools. The Elementary STEM Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program at Tufts is designed to prepare STEM teaching leaders in urban elementary schools.

Overview

This 12-month program begins with the study of how minds work and proceeds to develop practices of close attention and responsiveness to children's ideas, reasoning, and engagement. Our faculty view children as nascent scholars and the core of teaching as eliciting, recognizing, and cultivating the productive resources children bring with them into the classroom. Along with STEM disciplines, the program is designed to address multiple literacies, integrating reading, writing, social studies, and art throughout the curriculum. Students in the program are encouraged to think critically about issues such as matching children's learning needs with instruction, promoting equity, cultivating productive learning environments, and establishing and maintaining productive, respectful relationships with parents, communities, and school faculty and staff....
